Liberika Coffee is an endemic coffee plant from Africa, precisely originating from Liberia. Initially, this coffee plant was classified in the Robusta coffee group with the scientific name Coffea canefora var.Liberica. But the most recent grouping of scientists declares it to be a species of its own with the name Coffea liberica.
This is because morphologically and the other properties are not the same as Robusta coffee. This coffee was brought to Indonesia in the 19th century when many of the Arabica coffee plants at that time were stricken with disease. The regions which are widely planted with Liberika coffee are Bengkulu and Jambi.
One well-known variant of Liberika coffee is Excelsa coffee (Coffea liberica var.Dewefrei). The fruit is smaller than ordinary Liberika coffee and thinner-skinned and leaves more red. In addition, there are a number of local varieties successfully developed by the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Center (Puslit Koka), under the name "Libtukom", short for Composite Single Composite.
The characteristics of Liberika Coffee
The aroma obtained from Liberika or excelsa coffee is very distinctive and easy to distinguish from Robusta or Arabica coffee. Sharp sting, with a thicker bitter taste. Usually, Liberika coffee is mixed with milk to cover the sharp aroma and bitter taste of the coffee. Also often used as a mixture for Robusta coffee to add extra coffee aroma.
By local people, Liberika coffee is also known as Jackfruit coffee. In addition to the pungent aroma, also because of its large seeds, almost 2 times that of robusta or arabica coffee beans. Can also be identified from the coffee tree that can grow up to a height of 9 meters, similar to jackfruit trees.
Although the fruit is larger, the dry fruit is only 10% of the wet weight. This character is less favored by some farmers because of the reduced weight of the harvest time until the ready fruit is high enough. Until the harvest costs become relatively more expensive. This condition makes farmers reluctant to develop Liberika coffee.
